Late Summer Flowers

Late Summer Flowers

 │

I shot this photo of small red late summer flowers at the Brooklyn Botanic Garden in Brooklyn, New York City. This composition reveals the beauty that can be found in the smallest, seemingly insignificant, elements of the natural world. This composition also highlights how much a well composed background can add to macro flower photography. I chose a clean, simple background by using the widest aperture on the lens to throw the background completely out of focus. This can usually be achieved by shooting at the widest aperture, lens fully zoomed out (250mm on 55-250mm lens) at the minimum focusing distance. On my inexpensive Canon 55-250mm lens I can usually create a beautiful background blur that compliments the foreground subject. By paying attention to the colors and shapes in the background of your subject, you can improve the photo considerably.
