A photo of Goldfield, an Arizona ghost town on the Apache Trail.

This photo shows a setting in Goldfield, a charming Arizona ghost town located along the ruggedly beautiful Apache Trail. Located about 40 minutes outside of Phoenix, this attraction offers an entertaining and photogenic setting worth an afternoon’s visit.

In in the 1890′s the gold mining town of Goldfield was experiencing a boom. It boasted 3 saloons, a boarding house, general store, blacksmith shop, brewery, meat market and a school house. Just when it looked like the town would outgrow Mesa, the vein faulted, the grade of ore dropped and the town died a slow painful death. After several unsuccessful attempts to reopen the mines, the town did come to life again from 1910 on and off until 1926.

Located at the foot of the fabled Superstition Mountains, Goldfield is lots of fun to visit, and a refreshing contrast to the rather sterile newness of nearby Phoenix, Arizona. Some of its key attractions include:

  • Gunfights every hour Sat. & Sun. | High Noon – 4pm
  • Underground guided mine tours.
  • The only operating narrow gauge railroad in Arizona.
  • Jeep Tours of the Superstition Mountains.
  • Horseback Adventures, wagons, carriages.
  • Lodging and camping available at the Ghost Town.
  • Sunday Services & Weddings at Church on the Mount.

More information can be found on the Goldfield Ghost Town website. During the time I spent in Phoenix, Arizona, this was one of my favorite afternoon getaways.

This photo was captured on an early fall day when the summer heat had broken, allowing for the occasional bit of cloud cover (as seen in this photo). I shot this image with an old favorite, the Olympus E-300 (8 megapixel) mated to its kit lens. I converted the image to black and white using Silver EFX Pro Photoshop plugin by Nik Software, and did a bit of additional dodging and burning in Photoshop. -Photo by Donald Peterson.
