Jemez Mountain Trail Photos
Here are a few of my favorite photos of the ruggedly beautiful Jemez Mountain Trail along Highway 4 in Central New Mexico. This is one of the most appealing landscapes in Northern New Mexico, and is ideal for camping and fishing. Photos include Battleship Rock, Jemez Red Rock and other scenes recorded in early September, 2006. These are some of my earliest attempts at landscape photography after discovering the red rock beauty of New Mexico. I used a 6 megapixel Sony Cybershot H2 for these photos.
Battleship Rock is a dramatic 200 foot tall natural formation of welded volcanic ash in the Jemez Mountains located along the Jemez Mountain Trail. It is also a popular destination for fishing, picnics and hiking, with trails, parking and picnic facilities. Jemez River, popular for fishing passes along the base of Battleship Rock.
The red rock formations in the Jemez Pueblo along the Jemez Mountain Trail are the most dramatic in this area. This photo shows a platform used by the Walatowa Native Americans on Feast Days near the Walatowa Reception Center. Handsome red rock formations provide the backdrop for this beautiful scene. The Jemez Pueblo village is not open to the public. However, this red rock area and the adjacent Walatowa Visitors Center are open to the public year-round.
This photo shows another view of Jemez red rock in the Jemez Pueblo. This area enjoyed good rains the year this photo was taken, making for a greener than usual landscape.
I highly recommend a leisurely tour along The Jemez Mountain Trail in New Mexico. It is convenient to both Santa Fe and Albuquerque, and serves as a scenic route that connects both cities. Be sure to try an Indian fry bread from one of the local vendors in the Jemez Pueblo for a local taste treat! -Photo by Don Peterson
