The Rio Grande in Winter, Albuquerque, New Mexico. Photo by Donald Peterson.

Hardy cottonwood trees in winter trim are seen here along the bosque of the Rio Grande near Albuquerque, New Mexico. Coarsing through the heart of Albuquerque, the Rio Grande and its bosque provides the setting for Albuquerque’s most popular open spaces and parks. On a crisp winter night like this, a walk along the bosque is a pleasant diversion. The fragrant scent of burning mesquite wood from nearby fireplaces makes it a truly unique New Mexico experience. The beauty of this setting is enhanced by the setting New Mexico sun, adding warm blue and violet hues to the landscape’s color palette. This photo was captured with a tripod mounted Nikon D40 and kit lens.
