Times Square, 'Til You Drop...

Times Square, ‘Til You Drop…

 │

In this photo, the consumer’s greatest commandment, “(shop) ’til you drop,” is emblazoned on the mega billboards of the American Eagle Outfitters store in Times Square, New York City. Interestingly, there has been a subtle shift in consumer demand that affects this generation. According to April Lane Benson, Ph.D., author of To Buy or Not to Buy: Why We Overshop and How to Stop, the prevailing desire for consumers in prior generations was to “keep up with the Joneses.” In other words, we wanted to do as well or better than our neighbors. Now, consumer demand is driven by an all-consuming desire to keep up with the wealthy. Modern media bombards consumers with images of celebrity  lifestyles and extravagant wealth. No longer content to keep up with neighbor, the modern consumer wants to wear the same labels and drive the same cars as the wealthy. It is not surprising that shrewd advertisers encourage us to give our all to the modern gods of consumerism.

Take all advertising with a grain of salt. The pursuit of wealth becomes a frustrating “rat race” that does not lead to happiness or contentment. “A mere lover of silver will not be satisfied with silver, neither any lover of wealth with income.” -Ecclesiastes 5:10
