Green Web Design – A Recent Example
My web design studio has proven to be a natural fit for small businesses that promote green products. For good reason! I often use natural elements and colors in my web design, and focus on both the emotional and informative elements of web design. Here is a recent web design we developed for a start-up company selling a line of premium 100% organic bamboo and cotton “blanquettes” with design and quality suitable for the finest homes. It was a challenging but very enjoyable project!
There are various elements of this web design that support the “green” values of our clients products. The background colors are soft, nearly neutral pastels with a hint of texture. This allows the text to be clean and legible on each page while avoiding a generic pure white background. We only had a budget that allowed for shooting one strong visual for the home page. We art-directed and developed one compelling visual that serves not only as the anchor for the web site, but also became the key visual for branding in all advertising and marketing materials produced by the company. It features a model draped in one of our clients beautiful “blanquettes” in a scenic setting. I also designed the company logo, and selected a stylish typeface to be used for branding the product names. That single image encapsulates both the designer quality and green benefits of my client’s “blanquettes.” The end result is a visual presentation that looks great online, in advertising, and in all sorts of print media.
Truthfully, the biggest challenge of this web design project was the very tight time-frame for development. In fact, we only had three weeks from our initial contact with the client to the completion of a fully functional e-commerce web site. Whew! After a couple of intense conversations that helped us to establish the aesthetic imperatives of the web design, we moved quickly, keeping close communication with the client at every stage of development.
